Dundee
Dundee, the 'City of Discovery' is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tray
and is Scotland's fourth largest city. An increasingly popular choice as a short
city-break destination or family day out, Dundee has much to offer in shopping,
culture and history so it is not hard to see why. In recent years Dundee City, which
is its full name, has transformed itself from once being heavily industrialised
into a lively, cosmopolitan city, firmly in the 21st century having developed commercially,
culturally, artistically, and scientifically.
The arts and entertainment are catered for by the highly regarded Dundee Rep Theatre
and Dundee Contemporary Arts centre where visitors can watch a number of productions
and the Guitar and Mountain Film Festivals Dundee is home to many major events throughout
the year including the annual summer festival of street entertainment, and the city's
Food & Flower Festival, held in late August and September. This is now the largest
in Scotland.
Like several of Scotland’s other cities which offer superb shopping facilities,
Dundee’s city centre has much to offer with the Murraygate, Wellgate and the magnificent
glass-fronted Overgate shopping centres where you will find major department stores
and retailers to suit all interests. The City Quay on Dundee’s waterfront is a great
place to go for discounts at the factory outlets - guarantee designer labels at
low prices.
The Textile Heritage Centre at Verdant Works is a reminder of Dundee’s past industrial
heritage and was voted Europe's Top Industrial Museum in 1999 while just across
the city centre on the bank of the River Tay, Captain Scott's famous Antarctic expedition
ship RRS 'Discover' can be found at the award-winning Discovery Point Visitor Centre.
